SAT SAT 06:00 James Baldwin 90th Anniversary: No Complaints SAT b04cfdhm (Listen) SAT If he had lived James Baldwin would have celebrated his 90th SAT birthday today, 2nd August 2014. He died in 1987 aged 63. SAT The American novelist, playwright, poet and polemicist came SAT to prominence during the 1950s and 60s, decades torn by the SAT struggle for civil rights in America. Born into relative SAT poverty in Harlem in 1924, Baldwin was a trailblazing SAT explorer of race, class and sexuality in America in novels SAT like Go Tell It On The Mountain (1953), Giovanni's Room SAT (1956), Another Country (1962) and Tell Me How Long the SAT Train's Been Gone (1968). After first visiting Paris in SAT 1948, Baldwin eventually made his home in France. In 1984 SAT Caryl Phillips - the future prize winning British novelist - SAT met James Baldwin at his French home. Baldwin had become a SAT mentor to the young writer and he allowed him to record an SAT extraordinary interview with him - just three years before SAT his death. It ranged from Baldwin's childhood and the SAT realisation of his homosexuality, to his struggle against SAT naked racism in America. Baldwin said whatever he had SAT endured he had 'no complaints' - giving the programme its SAT title - No Complaints - when it was broadcast on BBC Radio 4 SAT in November 1984. SAT To mark the 90th anniversary Caryl Phillips returns to that SAT interview, to record his thoughts and feelings about James SAT Baldwin's legacy, and to introduce his own 2004 Radio 4 SAT play: A Kind of Home - James Baldwin in Paris. A play SAT inspired by Baldwin's fateful journey to Paris as a young, SAT penniless, black, homosexual writer struggling to survive. SAT It was a struggle that helped create one of the greatest SAT American writers of the 20th century. SAT Made for 4 Extra. The producer was Peter McHugh. With significantly less SAT technological advantages than present-day climbers, Chris SAT Bonington's team were faced with numerous personal and SAT environmental challenges. He kept an audio diary which helps SAT piece together the team's progress. SAT Also a writer, photographer and engineer, Sir Chris SAT Bonington has written 17 books and finally reached the SAT summit of Everest in 1985 with a Norwegian expedition. He SAT has been mountaineering since 1951, when he was 16 years SAT old, and continues to this day.
