He uses carefully selected objects to SAT explore the great issues of the day that preoccupied the SAT public and helped shape the works, and he considers what SAT they can reveal about the concerns and beliefs of SAT Shakespearean England. SAT From September 2005. SAT SAT 08:00 Archive on 4 b01lsr14 (Listen) SAT Inner Voices - The Burton Diaries SAT The archive of Richard Burton is a rich treasure. The SAT performances are by common consent amongst the most SAT compelling of any age, given in a voice that many have felt SAT to be an aural equivalent of heaven. Hamlet, Under Milk SAT Wood, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf and Equus stand out, SAT and then there are the blockbusters: Wild Geese, Where SAT Eagles Dare, Anthony and Cleopatra, Night of the Iguana and SAT The Robe. Add to that the poetry readings - Dylan Thomas of SAT course but also Shakespeare and the English Classics. It is SAT a feast for the ears. SAT Yet it is a remarkable testament to the man and to his life SAT that, just as magnetic as the body of work, is another SAT collection. Through several periods of his life, most SAT notably from the mid-1960s to the early '70s (his 'superstar SAT years') he kept a diary, sometimes handwritten, mostly typed SAT out and assembled in thick notebooks. The diaries provide a SAT unique view of the world in which he moved, among actors and SAT directors, writers and poets, millionaires and royalty. They SAT also give an insight into his approach to acting, his SAT insecurities, his drinking and his volatile relationship SAT with Elizabeth Taylor at a time when they were the most SAT famous couple in the world. SAT Twenty-five years ago, shortly after Burton's death, Melvyn SAT Bragg was given access to the diaries to write his SAT definitive biography of Burton, Rich. Now, to mark the SAT publication of the complete diaries, Bragg presents an SAT Archive on 4 which examines Burton's life through broadcast SAT interviews and the previously inaccessible lens of his SAT diaries. Bragg returns to Burton to reassesses the man in SAT the light of his own experience and in the light of the SAT private and confessional thoughts that Burton wrote, alone, SAT throughout his life. SAT Burton was the gifted son of a Welsh miner. He met a SAT remarkable teacher and made the journey to Oxford and on to SAT superstardom - but he was seldom really happy. He was a SAT hellraiser who often behaved appallingly and was accused of SAT squandering an extraordinary talent on drinking and bad SAT movies. If that was all he was then he'd be just a footnote SAT in 20th century culture. But Burton was also a man of SAT wonderful erudition, passion, insight and self- knowledge. SAT He fought his way through life through force of will, love, SAT and voracious reading. It is this side of the man that makes SAT him such a remarkable presence. It is also a side of him SAT captured in a rich vein of BBC archive and interviews. SAT The diaries show him on top of the world, in love, in SAT despair, and fighting the alcoholism that had killed his SAT father and he knew was killing him. This programme puts the SAT flesh and the voice back into our collective understanding SAT of one of the great cultural figures of the 20th century. SAT SAT 09:00 Suburbia b05n3yjq (Listen) SAT What created suburbia, when and how? SAT In the 19th century the first suburban districts sprang up SAT around city centres (at first London and Manchester) to SAT accommodate those who wanted to escape the squalid SAT conditions of the industrial town. From the mid-19th century SAT the development of the railways (like the Metropolitan line SAT to Middlesex and then Bucks), made it possible for the SAT majority of the city's population to reside outside the city SAT and to commute into the centre for work. The railway could SAT take you from Middlesex to The City, from Bucks to Baker SAT Street. It was the birth of Metroland, as celebrated by poet SAT Sir John Betjeman. SAT But the suburbs were more than just about planning and SAT building; they developed a culture set apart from the SAT metropolitan influence of the sinful city. In the suburbs SAT grew a whole lifestyle of refinement, respectability and SAT aspiration. And along with their distance from the city came SAT the disdain of the fashionable non-suburbanites: "How very SAT suburban!" became synonymous with a sneering disdain for SAT conventionality. SAT Simon Fanshawe explores Suburbia as a place of both SAT continuity and change. Through poems, TV sitcom, history and SAT commentary he traces the story of the suburbs - how they SAT came to be - and also their cultural influence on British SAT lifestyle from fashion, architecture, music, morals, SAT gardening and social one-upmanship. From Betjeman to Reggie SAT Perrin through, amongst other things, Mike Leigh's Abigail's SAT Party, Sue Townsend's Adrian Mole, TV sitcom The Good Life, SAT the sketches of Monty Python, and the birth of punk rock. SAT Simon explores what the suburbs were originally, what they SAT have become and how; despite changes in demographics and SAT social mobility, they still typify a very British set of SAT values. The programme also features exclusive interviews SAT with the likes of Michael Palin, Terry Jones and Penelope SAT Keith. SUN Nobel Prize winner and Forsyte Saga author John Galsworthy SUN described Stacy Aumonier as "one of the best short-story SUN writers of all time." Other famous admirers included Alfred SUN Hitchcock, who had several of his stories adapted for SUN television, and James Hilton, author of Goodbye, Mr Chips, SUN who once said of Aumonier: "I think his very best works SUN ought to be included in any anthology of the best short SUN stories ever written." SUN However since his untimely death at the age of 51, Aumonier SUN has been rather forgotten. This is particularly ironic SUN considering Galsworthy's belief - expressed in his foreword SUN to a posthumously published collection of short stories - SUN that Aumonier would, through his writing, "outlive nearly SUN all the writers of his day." SUN Sadly, this did not happen. Yet the recently published SUN collection of Aumonier's Extremely Entertaining Short SUN Stories has certainly helped bring this overlooked talent to SUN a new audience. Aumonier's stories are not only hilarious, SUN full of wit and genuine warmth for his subjects, but also SUN beautifully constructed insights into the various SUN absurdities of human behaviour; be it in the drawing rooms SUN of London high society or the trenches of World War I. SUN To some, he was an alternative comedian before the phrase SUN was even coined; never afraid to tackle previously taboo SUN subjects, such as sex, death or, with the routines that he SUN was most famous for, religion. Acclaim and controversy SUN followed him in equal measure, and his work has inspired SUN many modern comedians such as Jack Dee, Dylan Moran and SUN Eddie Izzard. SUN Fan Ed Byrne examines Dave's life, career and comic legacy, SUN remembering the impression his TV shows left on him as a SUN small child growing up in Ireland. Ed also explores how SUN Dave's prowess as a storyteller came from the rich oral SUN traditions of their shared Irish heritage. SUN Dave first found fame in the UK thanks to his appearances on SUN The Val Doonican Show in the mid 1960s, and Val talks about SUN how he first came to work with Dave. But before the BBC SUN television series, Dave had already toured much of the world SUN and enjoyed his own massively successful TV show in SUN Australia. SUN In 1971, Dave Allen At Large arrived on BBC TV and with its SUN mixture of sketches and Dave's unique sit-down stand up, SUN musing on life from his iconic stool with a glass of whiskey SUN in one hand and a cigarette in the other. TUE Launched in 1952 on the BBC Home Service, Frankly Speaking TUE was a novel, ground breaking series. TUE Early critics described it as 'unkempt', 'an inquisition' TUE and described the guest as prey being cornered, quarry being TUE pursued - with calls to axe the unscripted interview. But TUE the format won out and eventually won over its detractors. TUE Unknown or very inexperienced broadcasters were employed as TUE interviewers, notably John Freeman, John Betjeman, Malcolm TUE Muggeridge, Harold Hobson, Penelope Mortimer, Elizabeth TUE Beresford and Katherine Whitehorn.
