SUN SUN 15:45 Afternoon Reading b011bz70 (Listen) SUN The Pocket AA Milne, The Arrival of Blackman's Warbler SUN How to survive dinner parties by becoming an expert on SUN absolutely anything. SUN A hundred years ago, A.A. Milne was honing his writing SUN skills as Assistant Editor of Punch with his regular SUN humorous columns and essays. Perfect gems of the form, his SUN stories not only delight in the spirit of the age, they also SUN transcend the years with their insights. SUN Parodying the country-house weekend, with its uncomfortable SUN joys of evening games such as "Definitions", "The Complete SUN Kitchen" and "High Jinks at Happy-Thought Hall", Milne SUN captures the absurdity and vacuousness of characters in SUN transition from idle youth to the tedium of adulthood. SUN Of course, no country house weekend would have been complete SUN without "the little play for amateurs", perfectly formed SUN examples of which Milne supplies in read-aloud form. SUN When he re-published this collection of his humorous stories SUN much later in his career, he observed that for years his SUN younger self was "a model to which I was failing to live SUN up... in fact he became, as one's past is bound to become, SUN both a rival and a millstone." His talent for comic SUN observation that was to become evident in his tales of SUN Winnie-the-Pooh is obvious in these essays. SUN As he wrote himself by way of introduction: SUN "This little book contains the best of what my rival was SUN writing thirty years ago. I contemplate him now with SUN detachment. I have grown to appreciate his quality. So SUN impartial am I become, that I am torn between a desire to SUN tell him how very, very good he is, and a desire to re-write SUN his book for him. But I shall do neither, leaving him to SUN speak for himself." SUN Read by Ian McNeice SUN Abridged and Produced by Neil Cargill SUN A Pier Production for BBC Radio 4. Read FRI by Buffy Davis. FRI The victim is a famous crime fiction writer. Her latest book FRI threatens to uncover the shame of a small American town FRI whose dark secrets and those of her tormentor have been FRI buried for decades. FRI Sara Paretsky has created one of the most popular female FRI sleuths in modern crime fiction. Her heroine, V I FRI Warshawski, is a strong female character in a male-dominated FRI world. V I is comfortable packing heat and trailing nasty FRI suspects but she never loses touch with her basic FRI femininity. Paretsky says of her Warshawski: "I was troubled FRI by the way women were portrayed in (detective fiction) they FRI always seemed either evil or powerless. I thought it was FRI time for a tough, smart, likeable female private FRI investigator". FRI Producer: Joanne Reardon FRI Made for BBC Radio 7 and first broadcast in 2003. FRI FRI 06:30 The Wonderful Weightless World of the Flexidisc FRI b00sgbcr (Listen) FRI Long before the invention of the MP3, there was a way of FRI getting hold of music, speech, and other audio sensations, FRI free of charge, in the form of flexidiscs. Originally FRI developed in the 1930s to play at 78rpm, by the 1960s, FRI seven-inch, 45rpm flexidiscs were so cheap to produce, and FRI so light and bendy, that they were often given away free FRI with a magazine. In the Soviet Union, though, where FRI flexidiscs were called roentgenizdat, and were recorded on FRI disused medical x-ray sheets, the audio was usually of an FRI illegal nature, such as jazz music, or, later, punk rock. In FRI telling the story of the flexidisc, we'll hear plenty of FRI music, some of which is now valuable (such as the Rolling FRI Stones Exit on Mainstreet Blues, given away with New Musical FRI Express in 1972). FRI In tracking down the story of flexidiscs, presenter Paul FRI Bayley meets collector Jez Randell, journalist Ian Shirley, FRI and the novelist Tim Lott, who co-founded Flexipop magazine FRI in the early 1980s (which gave away a free flexi with every FRI issue). The programme includes extracts from flexidiscs FRI galore, including several advertisements for products as FRI diverse as crisps, hair pieces and rat poison, music from FRI big band jazz to beat groups to punk rock, and some of the FRI most famous recordings made on flexidisc including Beatles FRI fanclub records, Private Eye's satirical flexidiscs and the FRI sound of humpback whales, from the world's biggest FRI circulation flexidisc ever. FRI Presenter Paul Bayley previously presented The Strange FRI Parallel World of Christian Pop for Radio 4, which FRI subsequently inspired Frank Cottrell Boyce's radio play The FRI Believers. The darkly comic world of Victor Lewis-Smith. FRI Award-winning controversial comedy surfaced on BBC Radio 1 FRI in 1990 in the shape of Victor Lewis-Smith. The writer and FRI producer took a comedy cudgel to the self-satisfied, FRI mid-Atlantic style of the very network he was appearing on - FRI with hoax phone calls, sketches, plus comic takedowns of FRI high profile celebs. It's all deliciously sandwiched between FRI the original jangly Radio 1 jingles made by JAM Creative FRI Productions in Dallas, USA.
