SAT SAT 01:30 In Search of the Singing Postman b00tmlh2 (Listen) SAT The writer DJ Taylor grew up in Norfolk. When he was missing SAT his roots, he'd put on a record by Allan Smethurst, The SAT Singing Postman, to remind him of home. SAT Smethurst is best known for one song - Have You Got A Loight SAT Boy. By the mid 1960's he featured on the pop chart, just SAT behind The Moody Blues. With his goofy smile and postman's SAT uniform, he was the one hit wonder to end all one hit SAT wonders. But DJ Taylor believes he was something far more SAT than that. SAT Taylor argues that the songs turn out, not to be novelty SAT numbers, but plaintive celebrations of a kind of lost, rural SAT life that had begun to disappear, even as it was committed SAT to vinyl. His songs are firmly rooted in the traditional SAT ballads of Norfolk. His work is the last gasp of a genuinely SAT popular art form, before it went down amid the onslaught of SAT post-war mass culture. SAT There were even plans to send Smethurst to Nashville, the SAT idea being that 'Country and Eastern' would appeal to the US SAT audience. Smethurst admired the early American greats like SAT Jimmie Rodgers and The Carter Family - their playing SAT influenced his own lilting guitar style. SAT This programme tells the story of Smethurst's brief SAT dalliance with fame and his steady fall into obscurity as he SAT struggled with alcohol addiction. DJ Taylor pays tribute to SAT the man who loved Norfolk, and through his songs preserved SAT the memories and language of an entire way of life. SAT The programme is produced in Manchester by Nicola Swords. SAT This week, Kate looks at the subject of children. Are we all SAT wired to be baby-making machines? Not always, no. Some of us SAT would rather spend our hard earned cash in Mango than SAT Mothercare. Prospective parents are plagued by questions - SAT Would I be a good parent? Would a child change my life SAT beyond all recognition? Would having a child mean I could SAT legitimately buy myself Lego and eat jelly? SAT Can legislation across the world be used to either encourage SAT or discourage parenthood? And what's the cost of feeling you SAT have to want the same things as everybody else? Kate and the SAT audience draw up a list of pros and cons of having children, SAT and work out whether the average cost of raising a child SAT could be better spent making our lives more fun and SAT meaningful in other ways. SAT Next week Kate looks at "The Big White Wedding" - is it SAT every little girl's dream to be walked down the aisle SAT feeling like a Disney princess, looking like she's been SAT swallowed by taffeta? From October SAT 1993. SAT SAT 08:00 Archive on 4 b040h1d7 (Listen) SAT Dark Horse: An Alec Guinness Archive SAT Alistair McGowan reveals the private side of a purportedly SAT 'retiring' artist - a man who forged one of the most SAT stunningly successful theatrical and cinematic careers of SAT the last century with intelligence, guile and a deep SAT understanding of the creation of image. SAT One of the most extraordinary aspects of the film, SAT television, stage and radio career that made Sir Alec the SAT most successful British character actor of the 20th century SAT was his apparent talent for anonymity. Laurence Olivier, SAT Alec Guinness' mentor and co-star, famously described him as SAT 'a dark horse' in a leading article in Time Magazine. SAT A remarkably good mimic, Sir Alec preferred, it seemed, to SAT define himself by the roles he played. Was he really the SAT scholarly, unworldly artist he appeared to be? He was a SAT diarist, raconteur, and polished Hollywood operator, who SAT turned self-deprecation into an art-form, took pride in not SAT being recognised and disliked showmanship. SAT Alistair McGowan examines the many contradictions in the SAT life of this enigmatic man through archive of interviews SAT with the actor himself and those who knew him well. SAT Producer: Frank Stirling SAT A Unique production for BBC Radio 4. MON MON 06:30 A Strange, Enchanted Boy b00stsjh (Listen) MON eden ahbez is one of those extraordinary characters. His MON name is not well known but his story and influence are MON considerable. From Willow THU pattern dinner plates to the Brighton Pavilion, their THU designs are regarded as beautiful and sophisticated. But for THU the past two centuries European composers and musicians have THU had no qualms about mercilessly parodying what they thought THU of as 'Chinese tunes'. THU As a girl growing up in Hackney, the opening THU orientalised-flute strains of the 1970s pop record Kung Fu THU Fighting by Carl Douglas were enough to send future comedian THU Anna Chen running for cover. THU The same cliches haunt Turning Japanese by The Vapours, Hong THU Kong Garden by Siouxsie And The Banshees and David Bowie's THU China Girl. They have all followed a pattern set by Claude THU Debussy, Malcolm Arnold, Albert Ketelbey and Lancashire THU Linnet George Formby, who were equally guilty of taking THU Chinese musical motifs and mangling them - or simply making THU them up! THU How did this mocking abuse of a handful of venerable Far THU Eastern notes begin? THU Musicologist Dr Jonathan Walker accompanies Anna on a THU historical mission, picking out examples on the piano and THU explaining why and how our western ears hear certain note THU configurations as "oriental" - from Chopsticks to Chopin. THU They explore the pentatonic scale that chartacterises so THU much Chinese music, delve into the story of the Opium Wars THU which triggered a deep British disrespect of Chinese musical THU culture and unveil the earliest dubious examples of THU Chinoiserie in Western Music. THU And we hear from a new generation of British born Chinese THU musicians who are putting right the discordant wrongs of the THU past 200 years. His reasoning for this is that if he wasn't there THU doing the job badly then someone else would be doing it well THU and that would be a much worse scenario. THU When Harry collapses and is given only days to live, Ruth THU faces a moral dilemma. THU Supported by friends, criticised by those in authority, THU Ruth's decision forces both her and others to examine their THU own moral compass and to penetrate the mystery of the THU inheritance itself. FRI Alongside contributions from historians and qwerty experts, FRI Stephen meets a man who has deqwertified himself and adopted FRI Dvorak, a system claimed to be quicker and cleaner than FRI Qwerty. There's also an examination of newer, more modern FRI formats, which may be more efficient but are no match for FRI qwerty. FRI We also meet some speedy junior qwertists' primary school FRI pupils who learn to touch type as part of their curriculum. FRI They come up an idea for the ultimate system for inputting FRI text and in so doing demonstrate an important point about FRI how thought relates to language, and how any system, using FRI keyboard, pen or even speech is a compromise. FRI But will Qwerty be acquitted? FRI Producer: Nick Baker FRI A Testbed production for BBC Radio 4. The darkly comic FRI world of Victor Lewis-Smith. FRI Award-winning controversial comedy surfaced on BBC Radio 1 FRI in 1990 in the shape of Victor Lewis-Smith. The writer and FRI producer took a comedy cudgel to the self-satisfied, FRI mid-Atlantic style of the very network he was appearing on - FRI with hoax phone calls, sketches, plus comic takedowns of FRI high profile celebs. It's all deliciously sandwiched between FRI the original jangly Radio 1 jingles made by JAM Creative FRI Productions in Dallas, USA. FRI Winner of the British Comedy Awards 1990 for Best Radio FRI Comedy. FRI After making a series of late night programmes for Radio 1, FRI Victor took aim at TV in 1993 with BBC TWO's Inside Victor FRI Lewis Smith, before sparking another stir on Channel 4 in FRI 1998 with TV Offal.
