SAT As a former presenter on Woman's Hour, Sue MacGregor has a SAT unique insight into the way men used to use language to SAT patronise or dominate, and recalls one of her guests on the SAT programme referring to her as 'my dear'. SAT But as women began to win equality there was a genuine need SAT to discover whether and how women and men differed in the SAT way they spoke. SAT SAT 01:30 Mind Changers b00m0zz3 (Listen) SAT Arden House SAT Claudia Hammond presents a series looking at the development SAT of the science of psychology during the 20th century. SAT She re-visits Ellen Langer and Judith Rodin's 1976 study, SAT conducted in a New England nursing home, Arden House. SAT When the two psychologists set up the experiment so that SAT residents on two floors of the 360-bed home for the elderly SAT would experience some changes in their everyday life, they SAT had no idea that they were introducing factors which could SAT prolong life. SAT While residents on both floors were given plants and film SAT shows, only those on the fourth floor had the opportunity to SAT control these events: choosing the plant and looking after SAT it themselves, and choosing which night of the week to view SAT the film. SAT Eighteen months later, when Langer and Rodin returned to the SAT home, they were astonished to discover that twice as many of SAT the elderly residents in this 'choices' group were alive, SAT compared with the control group on the second floor, who had SAT been given plants that the staff tended, and were told which SAT was their film night. It appeared that taking control made SAT you live longer. SAT These findings fit in well with the work on learned SAT helplessness in dogs which Martin Seligman had done in the SAT late 1960s, and on Langer and Rodin's own studies on the SAT perception of control. SAT Claudia Hammond meets Ellen Langer, now Professor of SAT Psychology at Harvard, and hears about Arden House and the SAT work she has gone on to do on what she calls 'mindfulness'. SAT She visits Arden House, which is still a nursing home, and SAT is shown around by current administrator Joanne Scafati. SAT Dr Zelda Di Blasi, who lectures in psychology at University SAT College, Cork, sets the study in context, and Rosalie Kane, SAT Professor of Public Health at the University of Minnesota, SAT and Howard Kaplan, CEO of City Club Living accommodation for SAT the elderly, discuss the impact of Langer/Rodin on care of SAT the elderly. You could leave your desk, meet SAT friends in the pub, eat a three course meal, have a SAT lunchtime affair even...That hour was your own: it didn't SAT belong to your employer. No more. Now, one in five people in SAT the UK never eat lunch. Only one in one hundred regularly SAT take a full hour's break. How has such a huge social change SAT happened? Why on earth did we let the lunch hour go so SAT easily? SAT Matthew Sweet draws on archive recordings to explore what we SAT have lost, and what the hidden costs might be. Wall Street's SAT Gordon Gekko once said "lunch is for wimps" - why do we seem SAT to have accepted his conclusion? When Churchill enjoyed SAT several courses, washed down with wine and brandy, at midday SAT in Downing Street it was thought to help, rather than SAT hinder, his leadership of the country. Matthew talks to SAT social historian Juliet Gardiner, and to historian Sir David SAT Cannadine about Churchill's heroic dining. Sociologist SAT Harriet Bradley offers insights into the rise of SAT presenteeism and the impact of recession on our lunch time SAT habits. Protected in part by the military MON presence, the range has a curious atmosphere. Here, a team MON of civilian employees man the targets and look after the MON natural landscape. In the eyes of one MON local artist, Michael Sanders, they look like "accidental MON sculptures", punching out from stark landscape of the Wash. FRI FRI 06:30 The Keskidee b00k4fv9 (Listen) FRI Oral Historian Alan Dein pieces together the remarkable and FRI pioneering story of the Keskidee, Britain's first arts FRI centre for the black community. Founded in the early 1970's FRI and tucked away in a church hall in the backstreets of FRI Islington, London, it forged new ground for a generation of FRI black British poets, actors, artists and directors. Today a FRI plaque is being unveiled by Islington Council in recognition FRI of the cultural importance of the Keskidee, whose story was FRI first told when this programme was originally broadcast in FRI 2009. FRI Dub poet Linton Kwesi Johnson was the educational officer at FRI the Keskidee and Bob Marley shot the music video for 'Is FRI This Love?' there. It had its own drama company, artists in FRI residence and was a hub for African and Afro-Caribbean FRI politics and arts, as well as a creative nursery for FRI home-grown talent. It also catered for the needs of local FRI youth and gave a generation of black teenagers a space of FRI their own. But this massively influential cultural centre FRI also has a fascinating earlier history, when it served as a FRI progressive mission hall with a musical pastor and a FRI legendary silver band. Today the building has reverted to FRI being a religious base, housing an African church and a FRI devout and joyous congregation. FRI FRI 18:30 Fry's English Delight b00tgd1b (Listen) FRI Series 3, Accentuate the Negative FRI Contradiction is an addiction - from philosophical dialectic FRI to the verification of scientific and mathematical FRI hypotheses, and from religious controversy to traditional FRI pantomime exchanges with the audience. Oh No It Isn't, you FRI may think. Oh, yes, it very much is. FRI Stephen Fry examines various aspects of the subject with FRI language expert Professor David Crystal, theologian Melissa FRI Raphael-Levine, philosopher Anthony Grayling, and Oliver FRI Double, who has made a special study of comedy double-acts, FRI and will reveal just how vital contradiction is not only for FRI cross-patter partners but for the whole of comedy. FRI We learn about the Square of Opposition and about how there FRI is more than one way to be wrong. We find out just how the FRI law of double negatives work, and how beguiling and FRI sometimes surprising the oxymoron can be - that little FRI combination of a couple of words that cancel each other out FRI in some way. Well, it's only common sense, isn't it? FRI We also hear how those who claim to spot contradictions in FRI the Bible, or the Talmud, or the Koran are essentially FRI misguided, and we hear about a current development in FRI English that threatens to change one of the things that has FRI so far made the language different to French or German. FRI All of that, together with a lesson in when "No" does not FRI necessarily mean no - and when "Yes" doesn't really mean FRI yes, either.
