SAT A helicopter circles overhead while Italian police officers SAT and archaeologists peer into a 30-foot deep hole made in a SAT field outside Rome. The land may look like ordinary SAT farmland, but beneath the ground there are in fact Etruscan SAT tombs full of treasures. The hole has been made by a group SAT of "tombaroli"- tomb raiders who come in the night to smash SAT open hidden tombs, and grab the artefacts inside. They sell SAT them on to dealers, who in some cases offer them to museums SAT for a massive price. SAT The police officers in attendance are a members of a special SAT branch of the Italian Carabinieri (the military police) SAT which was set up to try to deal with the problem of stolen SAT art in the country. The unit, known as the Department for SAT the Protection of Cultural Heritage (Comando Carabinieri SAT Tutela Patrimonio Culturale in Italian) has its main SAT headquarters in Rome and branches throughout the country. SAT Its job is to try to stop the looting of Italy's cultural SAT treasures- from artefacts in excavations to paintings and SAT statues in country churches. SAT To try to stop the trafficking, carabinieri officers carry SAT out regular patrols on archaeological sites, They also check SAT items of from auction houses and exhibitions against their SAT vast database of stolen goods. Other officers carry out SAT checks on more contemporary artworks to make sure that SAT they're not forged. Since the unit began in 1969, the SAT success rate has been high, with thousands of artworks SAT recovered. SAT Alex Butterworth is in Rome to watch the work of the SAT Carabinieri TPC at first hand. He follows the archaeological SAT section on patrol and sees how the huge database is used to SAT recover stolen works which are sometimes changed beyond SAT almost all recognition by the thieves to avoid detection. SAT SAT 08:00 Archive on 4 b00t32rs (Listen) SAT Sellers in the Attic SAT Comedy writer and historian Glenn Mitchell examines SAT exclusive and lesser known recordings of Peter Sellers and SAT reveals a fascinating wealth of recently discovered SAT recordings presenting a new insight into the life of this SAT comic legend. SAT After Peter Sellers died in July 1980, the initial rush of SAT glowing eulogies swiftly made way for often highly SAT condemnatory accounts of his personality and behaviour. Some SAT of these are, admittedly, accurate, others take incidents in SAT isolation without regard for the context of the events SAT described, while in some instances the claims rely on SAT inaccuracies and misassumptions. SAT Fortunately there has been more perspective among recent SAT chronicles but the trend has continued to portray Sellers's SAT personal life as one with few, if any, redeeming features. SAT As regards his work, many accounts have concentrated on the SAT obvious aspects - the Panther films, Dr. Strangelove, SAT perhaps also The Goon Show, but Peter Sellers left far more SAT than that. SAT Mitchell, the writer and presenter of this programme, was SAT only 21 when the actor died but has been collecting Sellers SAT material from an early age. In this personal take on the SAT subject, Mitchell chronicles Sellers' career in parallel SAT with his own lifelong interest in the actor's work. He will SAT examine various recordings, explaining in each instance its SAT place within the canon, and how it may have shaped - or been SAT shaped by - Sellers' life and career. SAT The programme also explores the softer, compassionate side SAT to the legendary actor's nature, the aspect of the man which SAT once led to him talking a complete stranger - who was SAT perched on a high bridge - out of committing suicide. SAT Among the recent finds is a personal recording Sellers made SAT for a television producer whose daughter lost her sight. The SAT never before broadcast recording includes readings of the SAT poet William McGonagall with various comments throughout. SAT Not only is it vintage Sellers but it reveals a remarkable SAT and malleable side to his personality, catching him at a SAT very relaxed moment in his life contrasting with his often SAT cited volatile nature. SAT Mitchell's own focus will be on the lesser-known Sellers SAT material he has amassed, including home-movie prints, SAT soundtracks, rare interviews and out-takes. The programme SAT also profiles written archives from his first BBC TV and SAT Radio auditions. SAT Ultimately Sellers in the Attic will tell his remarkable SAT story - by revisiting the less obvious items from his vast SAT legacy, including such gems from the BBC archives as his SAT 1970 performance of the macabre music-hall monologue The SAT Ballad of Sam Hall, recorded at Wilton's in East London. SAT First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2010.
