SAT SAT 01:30 Fort Dunlop b00qpmgh (Listen) SAT Giles Poyner, a creative director at the iconic Fort Dunlop SAT building, pays tribute to the Birmingham landmark. He, his SAT mother and grandfather talk about their working life there. SAT Drive through Birmingham on the M6 and you can't fail to SAT notice an imposing fort-like building, standing proud SAT against the city's industrial skyline. The Fort Dunlop SAT building was built for the tyre company in the early 20th SAT century to accommodate the thousands of workers needed to SAT supply the growing motoring and aviation industries. The SAT Dunlop Tyre Company, along with the Austin Motor Company and SAT Cadbury's, was Birmingham's biggest employer, and those who SAT worked there had a job for life. But by the end of the SAT century, competition from overseas led to the closure of the SAT site, as Dunlop transferred much of its operation overseas. SAT The Fort was abandoned and stood empty for 20 years, until SAT it was taken over by an innovative urban design company who SAT transformed the vast empty warehouse space into state of the SAT art offices, cafes and shops. SAT This is where Giles Poyner works as design manager. The SAT achingly hip surroundings of his office are a far cry from SAT his 92-year-old grandfather's experience of working at the SAT Fort. He recalls the stench of rubber in the air, the SAT workers arriving by canal boat before the road was built SAT and, above all, the sense of being part of a family, cared SAT for by a benevolent employer. SAT Giles's mother Susan also worked at Fort Dunlop as a typist SAT during the 1960s. She remembers the generous facilities SAT provided for the workers, including a pub, theatre and SAT playing fields. SAT Giles Poyner pays tribute to this iconic Birmingham landmark SAT and discovers how his workplace has changed both physically SAT and culturally over the decades. But what if we SAT choose find out who they are - and what are they thinking of SAT as they step off the plane? SAT Alan Dein goes to Heathrow airport to greet people who've SAT flown in from anywhere in the world, and explores their SAT hopes and jet-lagged dreams of London. SAT SAT 04:00 The 3rd Degree b01dtkjn (Listen) SAT Series 2, Warwick SAT Coming this week from the University of Warwick, "The 3rd SAT Degree" is a funny, lively and dynamic quiz show aimed at SAT cultivating the next generation of Radio 4 listeners whilst SAT delighting the current ones. It's recorded on location at a SAT different University each week, and it pits three SAT Undergraduates against three of their Professors in a SAT genuinely original and fresh take on an academic quiz. Being SAT a Radio 4 programme, it of course meets the most stringent SAT standards of academic rigour - but with lots of facts and SAT jokes thrown in for good measure. SAT Together with host Steve Punt, the show tours the (sometimes SAT posh, sometimes murky, but always welcoming!) Union SAT buildings, cafés and lecture halls of six universities SAT across the UK. SAT The rounds vary between Specialist Subjects and General SAT Knowledge, quickfire bell-and-buzzer rounds and the SAT 'Highbrow & Lowbrow' round cunningly devised to test not SAT only the students' knowledge of current affairs, history, SAT languages and science, but also their Professors' awareness SAT of television, film, and Lady Gaga... In addition, the SAT Head-to-Head rounds, in which students take on their SAT Professors in their own subjects, were particularly lively, SAT and offered plenty of scope for mild embarrassment on both SAT sides... SAT The resulting show is funny, fresh, and not a little bit SAT surprising, with a truly varied range of scores, friendly SAT rivalry, and moments where students wished they had more SAT than just glanced at that reading list... SAT In this episode, the guests joining him to try and out-wrong SAT each other with their ideas and stories are comedians Lee SAT Mack, Susan Calman and "Harry Hill's TV Burp" writer Daniel SAT Maier. SAT In this edition the phrase 'keep calm and carry on' and SAT ridiculous things to get angry about both come under the SAT 'wrong' spotlight - as well as the best ideas for the worst SAT new concept albums. She won the Booker MON Prize for her novel Offshore in 1979, and her last work, The MON Blue Flower, was acclaimed as a work of genius. MON The early novels drew on her own experiences - a boat on the MON Thames in the 1960s, the BBC in war-time, a failing bookshop MON in Suffolk, an eccentric stage-school. The later ones opened MON out to encompass historical worlds which, magically, she MON seemed to possess entirely: Russia before the Revolution, MON post-war Italy, Germany in the time of the Romantic writer MON Novalis. MON Fitzgerald's life is as various and as cryptic as her MON fiction. It spans most of the twentieth century, and moves MON from a Bishop's Palace to a sinking barge, from a demanding MON intellectual family to hardship and poverty, from a life of MON teaching and obscurity to a blaze of renown. MON She was first published at sixty and became famous at MON eighty. This is a story of lateness, patience and MON persistence - a private form of heroism. Born more TUE than two thousand years ago, Mahavira is the inspiration for TUE millions of followers of the Jain religion. It teaches that TUE the way to liberation and bliss is to live a life of TUE non-violence and renunciation. At its heart is a belief that TUE the entire world, from the ground we tread on to the air we TUE breathe, is filled with life: our duty is to protect this TUE universe of living souls through non-violent action. TUE Mahavira is the last in the line of Tirthankars, beings who TUE were said to be able to cross over from the world of human TUE suffering into the realm of spiritual liberation. Unlike the TUE other Tirthankars, we can be certain that he existed. TUE "Mahavira asked his followers to renounce untruths and sex, TUE to give up greed and attachment to worldly things - and stop TUE all forms of killing or violence," says Professor Khilnani. TUE "In short, the normal, devious, grasping and aggressive self TUE had to be conquered." She won the Booker TUE Prize for her novel Offshore in 1979, and her last work, The TUE Blue Flower, was acclaimed as a work of genius. TUE The early novels drew on her own experiences - a boat on the TUE Thames in the 1960s, the BBC in war-time, a failing bookshop TUE in Suffolk, an eccentric stage-school. The later ones opened TUE out to encompass historical worlds which, magically, she TUE seemed to possess entirely: Russia before the Revolution, TUE post-war Italy, Germany in the time of the Romantic writer TUE Novalis. TUE Fitzgerald's life is as various and as cryptic as her TUE fiction. It spans most of the twentieth century, and moves TUE from a Bishop's Palace to a sinking barge, from a demanding TUE intellectual family to hardship and poverty, from a life of TUE teaching and obscurity to a blaze of renown. TUE She was first published at sixty and became famous at TUE eighty. This is a story of lateness, patience and TUE persistence - a private form of heroism. TUE Loved and admired, and increasingly recognised as one of the TUE outstanding novelists of her time, she remains also TUE mysterious and intriguing. She liked to mislead people with TUE a good imitation of an absent-minded old lady, but under TUE that scatty front was a steel-sharp brain and an imagination TUE of wonderful reach. It's recorded on location at a FRI different University each week, and it pits three FRI Undergraduates against three of their Professors in a FRI genuinely original and fresh take on an academic quiz. Being FRI a Radio 4 programme, it of course meets the most stringent FRI standards of academic rigour - but with lots of facts and FRI jokes thrown in for good measure. FRI Together with host Steve Punt, the show tours the (sometimes FRI posh, sometimes murky, but always welcoming!) Union FRI buildings, cafés and lecture halls of six universities FRI across the UK. FRI The rounds vary between Specialist Subjects and General FRI Knowledge, quickfire bell-and-buzzer rounds and the FRI 'Highbrow & Lowbrow' round cunningly devised to test not FRI only the students' knowledge of current affairs, history, FRI languages and science, but also their Professors' awareness FRI of television, film, and Lady Gaga... In addition, the FRI Head-to-Head rounds, in which students take on their FRI Professors in their own subjects, were particularly lively, FRI and offered plenty of scope for mild embarrassment on both FRI sides... FRI The resulting show is funny, fresh, and not a little bit FRI surprising, with a truly varied range of scores, friendly FRI rivalry, and moments where students wished they had more FRI than just glanced at that reading list...
