The ABC Gaumont and Rank/Odeon cinema SAT chains saw a money-making opportunity. A tattered copy of SAT The Jungle Book which her grandfather kept with him always SAT provides an unlikely clue, sending her on a quest that leads SAT to the extraordinary stories of the deathless man and the SAT tiger's wife. Today, Natalia evokes her grandfather as a SAT nine year old boy, and the day the men of his village set SAT off to hunt the tiger. SAT Tea Obreht is on "The New Yorker's Top Writers under 40 SAT Fiction Issue" (June 2010), and at 24 was the youngest on SAT the list. 'The Tiger's Wife' is one of the Waterstone's 11 - SAT the best debuts that they have picked for 2011. Her short SAT story, "The Sentry", appeared in the "Guardian Summer SAT Fiction Issue", alongside stories by Hilary Mantel and David SAT Mitchell. SAT She was born in 1985 in the former Yugoslavia, and raised in SAT Belgrade, where she spent her childhood. In 1992, her family SAT immigrated, and in 1997 eventually settled in the United SAT States. SAT The reader is Hattie Morahan. SAT Abridged by Sally Marmion and produced by Elizabeth Allard. SAT "All this, of course, was scandalous behaviour," says SAT Professor Sunil Khilnani "But Mira proved herself SAT ungovernable in her spiritual zeal". Mirabai composed up to SAT a hundred songs or bhajans which have been passed down SAT through the centuries by oral tradition. Others have been SAT added in her name over the centuries. Today some see Mirabai SAT as a potent symbol of feminism and self-transformation, SAT others as a passionate religious inspiration. SAT SAT 04:00 The 3rd Degree b01dp52g (Listen) SAT Series 2, University of Northampton SAT Coming this week from the University of Northampton, "The SAT 3rd Degree" is a funny, lively and dynamic quiz show aimed SAT at cultivating the next generation of Radio 4 listeners SAT whilst delighting the current ones. It's recorded on SAT location at a different University each week, and it pits SAT three Undergraduates against three of their Professors in a SAT genuinely original and fresh take on an academic quiz. Being SAT a Radio 4 programme, it of course meets the most stringent SAT standards of academic rigour - but with lots of facts and SAT jokes thrown in for good measure. SAT Together with host Steve Punt, the show tours the (sometimes SAT posh, sometimes murky, but always welcoming!) Union SAT buildings, cafés and lecture halls of six universities SAT across the UK. SAT The rounds vary between Specialist Subjects and General SAT Knowledge, quickfire bell-and-buzzer rounds and the SAT 'Highbrow & Lowbrow' round cunningly devised to test not SAT only the students' knowledge of current affairs, history, SAT languages and science, but also their Professors' awareness SAT of television, film, and Lady Gaga... In addition, the SAT Head-to-Head rounds, in which students take on their SAT Professors in their own subjects, were particularly lively, SAT and offered plenty of scope for mild embarrassment on both SAT sides... SAT The resulting show is funny, fresh, and not a little bit SAT surprising, with a truly varied range of scores, friendly SAT rivalry, and moments where students wished they had more SAT than just glanced at that reading list... SAT Producer: David Tyler SAT A Pozzitive production for BBC Radio 4. This week the worst experiences at SAT a party and terrible ideas for a series of children's books SAT are just two of the challenges faced by the panel. Will SAT anyone beat Isy Suttie's suggestion for a 'wrong' children's SAT book - the paperwork-themed 'Morris The Admin Mouse'? SAT The host of So Wrong It's Right, Charlie Brooker, also SAT writes for The Guardian and presents BBC4's satirical series SAT Newswipe and Screenwipe as well as Channel 4's You Have Been SAT Watching. SAT SAT 06:00 The Forsytes b06z0ybl (Listen) SAT Episode 1 SAT from the novels of John Galsworthy SAT Dramatised for radio by Shaun McKenna SAT Of all his beautiful possessions, wealthy solicitor Soames SAT Forsyte considers his wife, Irene, the most beautiful. SAT Why then does she want separate bedrooms? SAT Original music composed by Neil Brand SAT Produced and directed by Marion Nancarrow SAT Over the next 2 years, BBC Radio 4 is broadcasting a new SAT dramatisation of all 9 books in John Galsworthy's The SAT Forsyte Saga. An epic tale of sex, money and power in the SAT lives of an upper middle-class family in London, it spans 50 SAT years from 1886 to 1936. SAT We begin today with a 90 minute drama which introduces us to SAT the family in 1886 and in particular to the cautious, SAT meticulous Soames Forsyte, of whom Galsworthy says "he would SAT not have gone without a bath for worlds". As the family SAT gathers in their huge London houses around the Green Park SAT and at what's known as "Forsyte Exchange", they can SAT establish the precise stock of any family member, "who's up, SAT who's down and who might be heading for a fall". But little SAT do they realise in their comfortable, complacent lives how SAT the old world order is changing. Young June Forsyte has SAT fallen in love with the dashing and unorthodox architect, SAT Philip Bosinney. But when she introduces him to her SAT sister-in-law - Soames's wife Irene - scandal is waiting SAT just around the corner. SAT The story continues every day this week in the 15 Minute SAT Drama slot and concludes in the Saturday Drama at 1430. SAT Award-winning writers Shaun McKenna and Lin Coghlan are SAT dramatising the complete novels and Interludes and have SAT taken a new approach to the books - delving deeper behind SAT the Edwardian façade to bring more of Galsworthy's wonderful SAT insight, wit and observation from the page. Although SAT focussed on the period in which they were written - in the SAT first 20 years of the 20th century - the novels feel SAT remarkably contemporary and have much to reveal of our own SAT world and inner lives. SAT Jessica Raine (Call the Midwife, Jericho) takes a central SAT role as narrator, with Juliet Aubrey playing Irene and SAT Joseph Millson, Soames. Later in the series they are joined SAT by Jonathan Bailey, Max Bennett and Ben Lambert. SAT This first 90' drama comprises most of the first novel "The SAT Man of Property". SAT The Producers are Marion Nancarrow and Gemma Jenkins. SAT And you can hear the next 2 novels in the Saga - "The SAT Forsytes Continue" - in April. SAT Minus his famous fridge, Tony returns to Ireland in search SAT of the craic, spends a day at the races and plunges into SAT Dublin's nightlife. On the west coast, people point to a SAT tiny entry in the guides where he might just find the true SAT meaning of the word. SAT Producer: Lucy Willmore SAT First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2000. SAT SAT 08:00 Archive on 4 b00y4zd1 (Listen) SAT Decimal Day - What's That in Old Money? SAT Forty years ago, Britain "went decimal". Two thousand years SAT of everyday currency history was overthrown overnight as the SAT country woke up to "new money" on February 15th 1971 and SAT said goodbye to coins such as the crown, the florin and the SAT shilling. SAT Few economic events have affected the entire country so SAT immediately and Peter Day delves into the archives to SAT examine how the country prepared for and responded to D Day. SAT It was Harold Wilson's Labour government that began the SAT process of decimalisation in the 1960s after many years of SAT discussion. Then cabinet minister Tony Benn recalls how SAT changing Britain's money fitted in with the modernising SAT ideology of the time, while former Chief Secretary to the SAT Treasury Dick Taverne remembers the passion of the "Save our SAT Sixpence" campaign. SAT Economists Peter Jay and Will Hutton discuss whether SAT decimalisation contributed to the double-digit inflation of SAT the 1970s alongside archive stories of price rises and SAT "rounding up", as earnest commentators worried about how SAT 'the housewife' would cope. Did we lose something, SAT culturally and intellectually, when we embraced new money? SAT Oxford Professor of Mathematics Marcus du Sautoy considers SAT whether "thinking in tens" is really the best way to go SAT about things. And Peter visits The Kings' Head pub in North SAT London where the landlord's tills charged in pounds, SAT shillings and pence for some three decades after D-Day. He SAT also talks to Sir Patrick Moore - patron of the Metric SAT Martyrs campaign - about his love of imperial measures. SAT Britain may have been successful in decimalising its SAT currency in 1971 but why was the movement towards full SAT metrication - begun at the same time - never completed? SAT Finally Peter asks, if you're old enough to remember, is it SAT still possible to think in "old money"? SAT Producers: Simon Jacobs and Phil Smith SAT A Unique production for BBC Radio 4. SAT Credits SAT Producer: Simon Jacobs SAT SAT 09:00 Permission to Speak, Sir!: Dad's Army on Radio SAT b007jw4r (Listen) SAT They don't like it up 'em! SAT After winning their frontline TV offensive, how did the Home SAT Guard win the war of the ears with a rearguard action for SAT radio? SAT Legendary comedy producer Harold Snoad and actor Michael SAT Knowles reveal how they went about adapting the classic BBC SAT TV hit series for radio - as the writers Jimmy Perry and SAT David Croft were too busy to do it themselves. Over three SAT hours, enjoy six Dad's Army episodes made for radio: SAT The Enemy Within the Gates (1974) SAT Don't Forget the Diver (1975) SAT The Day the Balloon Went Up (1975) SAT When Did You Last See Your Money (1975) SAT If the Cap Fits (1975) SAT Put that Light Out (1975) SAT Snoad and Knowles reflect on how the cast took to SAT re-recording the shows without cameras and discuss the SAT changes that had to be made to make the TV scripts work. SAT The duo's association with Dad's Army continued with their SAT spin off radio comedy series, It Sticks Out Half a Mile - SAT still to be heard on BBC Radio 4 Extra. MON MON 06:30 Pistols at Dawn b00s6svn (Listen) MON Between 1613 and 1614 it is claimed that every distinguished MON family in the UK lost a member to duelling. James I even MON campaigned against it, but the aristocracy wanted to retain MON it as a legal way of settling disputes 'honourably'. The MON practice continued until it was eventually outlawed at the MON end of the nineteenth century. Until it was, the duel has a MON fascinating place in British history as a means of 'solving' MON dispute and novelists and playwrights have been using it as MON a way of spicing up plots and intrigue along the way. MON As a youngster, Justin Champion loved adventure novels which MON were jam-packed with sword play - The Three Musketeers, The MON Prisoner of Zenda and Scott's Waverley series. He has always MON been intrigued as to why men felt the urgency to defend MON their honour in such a dangerous way. In this programme, he MON tracks the history of the duel, its influence, some MON particularly pivotal duels, is shown how to sword fight and MON thinks he's found the reason why duelling eventually ceased MON as a practice in the UK. MON Justin talks to experts of Shakespeare to discuss how MON frequently the Bard picked up on the duelling debate in many MON of his plays including Romeo and Juliet. He visits the Royal MON Armouries Collection in Leeds to witness a sword fight. MON Justin is shown the techniques and is handed a sword for a MON tutorial. He charts the move from sword to pistol and gets a MON tour behind the scenes at the Royal Armouries Collection to MON look at some important swords and pistols involved in MON duelling. MON Justin also talks to fellow historians about significant MON duels and their political and literary impact. The duel has MON even been used by Cabinet Ministers and Prime Ministers as a MON way of settling their differences. We hear from the BBC MON Deputy Political Editor, James Landale (who tells the story MON of his ancestor's involvement in the last fatal duel in MON Scotland in 1826) and who also tells listeners about MON Wellington's engagement in a duel in Battersea. MON Listeners will also hear from a social historian of the 19th MON century about how the meaning of "honour" changed for men MON during this period and how a pension arrangement changed MON forever as the willingness of men to accept an invitation to MON "pistols at dawn". TUE Malik Ambar's story challenges some of our familiar TUE perceptions of slavery. He was part of a tradition of TUE military slavery which created elite warriors, educated and TUE nurtured by their masters and treated almost like sons. Once TUE freed, his power base grew. He took on the mighty Mughal TUE Empire of the north using sophisticated guerrilla tactics TUE and an ability to harass his enemy under cover of darkness. TUE Emperor Jahangir became obsessed with the Ethiopian, calling TUE him "the ill-starred Ambar" and "Ambar of dark fate". A TUE painting commissioned by Jahangir shows the Ethiopian's TUE severed head on a spear and the Emperor firing arrows into TUE it. However, as Prof. Khilnani reveals, all is not what it TUE seems in that image. TUE This series will showcase a comedian at the top of his TUE abilities tackling difficult and important 'slow news' TUE topics with a depth and perceptiveness that remains outside TUE the remit of mainstream 'topical' comedy. TUE In this second episode, Andrew will tackle the internet. TUE Whether it's online pornography twisting our children's TUE minds or GCHQ reading our emails, it seems only right to TUE have a healthy distrust of the internet. But surely, to TUE paraphrase a former Prime Minister, there's no such thing as TUE the Internet - there are men, and women, and lolcats. What TUE is it about the internet that makes people on it so scary? TUE Always adept at making shrewd, balanced and very funny TUE political observations, Maxwell was one of the first comics TUE at the 2011 Edinburgh Festival to react to the riots in TUE England and the Arab Spring and evolve his act accordingly TUE to rave reviews and a nomination. THU With pubs disappearing at the rate of more than three a day, THU signalling one of the most rapid cultural shifts of recent THU times, half a dozen landlords and landladies reflect on life THU as a licensee and explore what we're in danger of losing THU besides the beer and the buildings. THU This rueful view from behind the bar includes reflections on THU the qualities of a good landlord or landlady; their role as THU community confessional and settler of tap room fights, THU dispenser of best bitter and pearls of wisdom. THU We hear from old hands like Barbara, an ex-Bunny girl who THU runs the Grapes in London's Limehouse; Tetley Dave who THU fought a battle to keep the Shoulder of Mutton from closing THU in Castleford; Maureen from the Waggon and Horses at THU Langsett who's famous for her pies; ex miner Dennis from THU Barnsley, whose bête noir is health and safety; stand-up THU comedian Toby- who recalls lining up six pints apiece for THU the miners coming off shift at his auntie's pub in a THU Yorkshire pit village; and former Cambridge academic Tim, THU who's taken early retirement to open his first pub in York - THU the Phoenix- just as many others are shutting up shop. How THU have these landlords and landladies kept their marriages THU together , living and working on the premises? How much of a THU tempatation was it to hit the top shelf and go for the THU optics after a hard day's graft behind the bar? Why do they THU think the pub can teach the next generation how to hold THU their drink. And how do they handle an objectionable THU customer without starting a wild-west barroom brawl? THU THU 23:00 Believe It! b01h73pg (Listen) THU Series 1, Drink THU Believe it! THU Celebrity autobiographies are everywhere. Richard Wilson has THU always said he'd never write one. THU Based on glimmers of truth, BELIEVE IT is the hilarious, THU bizarre, revealing (and, most importantly, untrue) celebrity THU radiography of Richard Wilson. THU He narrates the series, weaving in and out of dramatised THU scenes from his fictional life-story. He plays a heavily THU exaggerated version of himself: a Scots actor and national THU treasure, unmarried, private, passionate about politics, THU theatre and Manchester United (all true), who's a confidant THU of the powerful and has survived childhood poverty, a THU drunken father, years of fruitless grind, too much success, THU monstrosity, addiction, charity work, secret work for THU governments and fierce rivalry with Sean Connery (not true). FRI It was Ken Campbell who first brought the idea of the FRI Improvathon - a marathon of improvised drama and comedy - to FRI Britain from Canada, where he'd been inspired by Dana FRI Anderson and his Die-Nasty company at Edmonton's Varscona FRI Theatre. FRI 25 actors gathered for the 6pm start on Friday, and most of FRI them were still there when it ended at 9pm on Sunday. So was FRI the audience, though there were some thin periods in the FRI early hours of the morning. The theme was loosely Victorian FRI and on stage at various times were Queen Victoria and Prince FRI Albert, Charles Dickens, Oscar Wilde, Jane Austen and many FRI made up characters. FRI Once the actors have been improvising for 30 hours they FRI experience what Dana calls 'Stargate' and find themselves FRI 'being' rather than acting. They no longer have to think FRI about what to do or say on stage - it just happens. They FRI define this as being in touch with their 'lizard' or FRI instinctual brain. FRI Nina asked Dr Mark Lythgoe, Director of the Centre for FRI Advanced Biomedical Imaging at University College London to FRI account for this; he puts it down to a combination of sleep FRI deprivation and creative high which leads to disinhibition.
