SAT SAT 02:15 Plants: From Roots to Riches b04b2wzn (Listen) SAT Lumping and Splitting SAT By 1850 identifying and classifying plants had become far SAT more important than mere list making. Establishing the SAT global laws of botany - what grew where and why - occupied SAT the well travelled naturalist Joseph Hooker - son of Kew's SAT director William Hooker and close friend of Charles Darwin. SAT Kathy Willis hears from historian Jim Endersby on how Hooker SAT was to acquire species from all over the world to build up SAT the first accurate maps of the world's flora. SAT Mark Nesbitt, curator of Kew's economic botany collection, SAT reveals how gifts to Hooker in the collection reveal the SAT relationship between the amateur collector in the field and SAT Hooker back at Kew was one built on trust and mutual SAT understanding. SAT But, as Jim Endersby explains, the relationships were SAT frought with tension when it came to naming new plants. SAT Arguments between those claiming they had found new species SAT (often called "splitters") versus cautious botanists, such SAT as Hooker, who would often "lump" together species as SAT variants of the same, raised new debates about what SAT constitutes a new species. And as Mark Chase, Keeper of SAT Kew's Jodrell Laboratory reveals, the arguments continue SAT today. SAT SAT 08:00 Archive on 4 b01kjgxc (Listen) SAT The Night of the Long Knives SAT Fifty years ago, Harold Macmillan instigated a purge that SAT shocked British politics to its core. It was the most SAT dramatic government reshuffle in modern history. In one SAT evening he sacked seven members of his Cabinet including his SAT Chancellor of the Exchequer, Selwyn Lloyd. It was meant to SAT be a show of strength but to everyone else, it was a SAT catastrophic admission of weakness signalling the beginning SAT of the end of his premiership and Tory party leadership. SAT In the late 50s, Macmillan had earned the nickname Supermac SAT for rescuing the country from the wake of Suez and ushering SAT in a period of unrivalled affluence. But Local Elections had SAT gone badly and the by-elections worse. The government's SAT tight economic policies, thanks to Chancellor Selwyn Lloyd, SAT were unpopular with the voters. Selwyn Lloyd's attempts to SAT keep both inflation and wages under control had led to SAT public sector wages being frozen. Nurses and teacher were SAT getting poorer while the rich were getting richer. The SAT public was furious, and Macmillan was feeling the pressure. SAT The Cabinet was fractious and there were complaints of a SAT lack of leadership. He had to make an example of his SAT Chancellor. The Night of the Long Knives had begun. SAT In modern politics these events have become shorthand for a SAT botched reshuffle. The scale of the event has never been SAT repeated since, but the tension between a PM and the SAT Chancellor remains. SAT Through a combination of archive material and original SAT interviews with historians and eyewitnesses such as Jonathan SAT Aitken who, as private secretary to Selwyn Lloyd, captured SAT the drama of that night in his hitherto unknown diary. SUN Genetic mutation has devastated the world. In the emergent SUN bleak, primitive society, any deviation is seen as the work SUN of the devil, ruthlessly hunted out and destroyed. In law SUN abiding, God-respecting Waknuk anyone who does not conform SUN to the 'norm' must keep their deviation secret or face the SUN consequences of discovery. SUN Directed by Nadia Molinari SUN Written in 1955 Wyndham's novel explores the dangers SUN inherent in discrimination and the threats posed by SUN religious fundamentalism. The 'Old People' who caused the SUN apocalypse are depressingly like us: ' They were shut off by SUN different languages and different beliefs. They created vast SUN problems then buried their heads in the sands of idle SUN faith.' The children of the future (the Chrysalids) are able SUN to 'think-together' and so can rise above the selfish SUN violence and conflicting religions of the past. Wyndham's SUN story of a group of persecuted teenagers is more timely than SUN ever in our post-Fukushima, war-riven, genetically SUN engineered and religiously divided world. MON MON 06:30 Who Was Opal? b00pk9y9 (Listen) MON Opal Whiteley, born in 1897 in the USA, wrote an MON extraordinary book and was at the heart of an unsolved MON mystery. Writer Melanie McFadyean explores Whiteley's MON childhood in an Oregon lumber village and her rise to fame MON in America, her exotic adventures and many years in British MON asylum, where she died in 1992. Her gravestone in Highgate MON Cemetery bears the inscription 'I spake as a child.' MON Did she speak as a child or was her diary, said to have been MON written by her aged six or seven, and published in 1920, a MON hoax? Entitled The Story of Opal: The Journey of an MON Understanding Heart, it was an instant bestseller. But then MON people began to wonder. A gifted amateur naturalist, Opal MON visited the offices of the periodical Atlantic Monthly, MON where publisher Ellery Sedgewick asked her if she had ever MON kept a diary. Opal said an early diary existed, but it had MON been ripped to pieces by a jealous sister. She had, however, MON kept the pieces in a hat box. Sedgewick sent for the boxful MON of fragments and set Opal to work, piecing them together. MON The task took her nine months. Photographs of the mended MON manuscript, 150,000 words long, reveal that it was written MON in crayon, in capital letters, on any paper she could get, MON even paper bags. MON But the diary is too complex to be the work of a young MON child. Threaded through it are concealed acrostics and MON oddly-detailed references to French royalty, including dates MON of birth, place names and historical anecdotes. In her MON introduction Opal claimed she had been adopted by the MON lumberjack family, the Whiteleys, after her mother had MON drowned, that her real name was Francoise D'Orleans, and MON that her real father was Duc Henri, Prince d'Orleans. The MON Orleans family always denied she was genuinely related, the MON Whiteleys were devastated that she rejected them and, MON hounded by the press, changed their names and went to MON ground. Opal Whitely left the USA in the early 1920s, never MON to return. She trailed chaos in her wake, but she had MON charisma and charmed rich and influential people. MON During the Second World War, Opal lived in a London flat, MON along with thousands of books. But her mental condition MON deteriorated and she was placed in Napsbury Hospital, near MON St Albans, in 1948, where she spent the next 44 years until MON her death in 1992. WED WED 06:30 Bridging the Gap b00q3kvw (Listen) WED A vivid sound portrait of the Tyne Bridge which draws on the WED voices and sounds of the river, the bridge, local people and WED wildlife to explore the history, construction and role of WED this iconic bridge. WED It straddles the river between Newcastle and Gateshead, WED bridging the gap between past and present, north and south. WED The earliest bridge across the Tyne, Pons Aelius, was built WED by the Romans near the location of the present Tyne Bridge. WED After it fell into disrepair a stone bridge was built in WED 1270, but this was destroyed by the great flood of 1717. The WED idea for the present Tyne Bridge dates back to 1883, but it WED wasn't until 1825 that work began. The design is based on WED the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and while work on the Sydney WED bridge began first, the Tyne Bridge was finished and opened WED first by King George V on 10th October 1928. WED The establishment of the Tyne Bridge was essential to the WED development of the city of Newcastle. The river was the WED reason that the Romans first settled in the area in 120AD, WED and centuries later the river was a significant factor in WED Newcastle's huge shipbuilding and coal industries. WED The Tyne is a major artery through the city, the Tyne Bridge WED a vital span; a thoroughfare of business and trade, a link WED between Gateshead and Newcastle, between north and south. As WED a giant arch, the bridge is an engineering triumph and WED hugely symbolic. It spans place and time, and as a port-way WED it's symbolic of the changes which have taken place in the WED north east. Today, the wildlife has moved into the gaps WED vacated by the industrial past; the river is home to otters WED and salmon and the bridge is a nesting site for kittiwakes, WED a species of ocean-travelling gull. The birds which nest WED here and on the Baltic on the Gateshead riverbank make it WED the furthest inland breeding site of kittiwakes in the WED world. WED With recordings by wildlife sound recordist Chris Watson, WED the sounds of the waves, the wind and the wildlife are WED combined with the voices of the river in this powerful and WED vivid portrait of a magnificent bridge. Now, 25 years WED on, a new series sees another raft of the world's best-loved WED comedians talking to each other about their lives and work. WED This week, two heavyweights of stand-up are in conversation WED as Ed Byrne interviews Al Murray. His celebrated observational routines made him WED a leading light of the UK stand-up circuit in the mid WED nineties and he went on to tour internationally, playing WED festivals and theatres across the world. Today over £5m of orchid hybrids WED are imported as cut flowers into the UK each year. For the WED Victorians orchids were the chosen ornaments of royalty and WED captured the 19th century fascination with scientific oddity WED and imperial conquest. WED Prof Kathy Willis explores how orchids, one of the planet's WED most diverse family of plants, mesmerised Victorian devotees WED and became not only trophy plants of the rich but also a WED scientific tool to promote a new theory of evolution. The WED study of orchids also paved the way for cultivation of WED exotics for all. WED Lara Jewitt tours the orchid glasshouses at Kew where over WED 3000 species are cultivated, and explains the biology unique WED to orchids that fuels interest for both scientists and plant WED lovers. WED Darwin was fascinated with these rare and precious plants. WED Their unique pollination mechanisms helped back up his new WED evolutionary theory based upon natural selection. THU He uniformly despises his clients, especially the ladies, THU until the young, widowed, naive and immensely rich Lady THU Franklin hires him to take her on trips to cathedrals which THU she had visited with her late husband. Lady Franklin has THU been in mourning for her late husband 'a man considerably THU older than her and an invalid' for two years, and is finding THU it impossible to return to normal life. THU In the confines of the car, and in search of a cure for her THU depression, she shares her burden with him. THU THU 14:15 Plants: From Roots to Riches b04brrjg (Listen) THU Plant Invaders THU The Victorians' pride at the effortless movement of plants THU around the world during the late 19th century was having an THU unwelcome side effect. Invasive species were beginning to THU wipe out native populations of plants. With no natural THU predators to control them, one man's flower was turning into THU another man's weed. THU Prof Kathy Willis hears how during the late 1800s, many THU invasive species from Japanese knot weed to Himalayan balsam THU to water hyacinth came from deliberate introductions and THU asks if today, trying to control them is ultimately futile? THU As historian Jim Endersby explains both Charles Darwin and THU Kew's director Joseph Hooker were the first to examine the THU impact of invasives, having noticed on the island of St THU Helena and Ascension Island the effect on native plants. THU One of the current biggest invaders is lantana, familiar to THU British gardeners as a small pot plant. As Shonil Baghwat of THU the Open University reveals, since its introduction to THU Kolkata Botanical garden in the 1870s it decimated native THU teak plantations. But today opportunities exist to exploit THU its presence for the wood, basketry and paper industries. THU And Kathy Willis hears from Kew conservationist Colin Clubbe THU on the extent to which we should view invasive plants in our THU ecosystems as part of a strategy to maintain resilience to THU environmental change in the future. FRI Historically, the English have been seen as distrustful of FRI foreigners and wary of foreign food. Even more curious is how FRI this passion for curry is now recognised as part of the FRI British identity. Vindaloo was the unofficial song of FRI England's 1998 World Cup team - an unlikely battlecry for FRI English football fans.
